In the old version, the GPS tag is inserted into the photo with a third-party tool, and using Java to match the log entries with photos. In the new version, I wrote a C# program to do the entire job. The algorithm is improved. It's way faster and easy to make changes. I bought a new GPS tacker unit. It is small sized and light weighted, so that I can carry it with me while I am taking photos. My C# peogram will match the log entries (NMEA) with the photos, and insert the GPS info (EXIF) into the photo. A watermark is added as well to notice the users.

This is an interesting project. It animates the route on the Google Map based on the real geo-locations.

How it works:
1. Turn my GPS on, and run a software to generate the NMEA log file. This log file contains all the inforamtion I need to complete this project, such as Latitude, Longitude, speed, time, etc.

2. I wrote a program to parse this log file, and get only what I need.

3. Mainly use Google Map API to animate the route.

PS: This is my 100th piece of work on the sunnyspeed.com in the past 5 years. I enjoyed working on these interesting projects, and learned lots of stuff. I am proud of this.

Problem: I frequently check some online shopping websites to see if a product is on sale, or to see if a web page has new articles. Somehow, it is time consuming to do these work by hands.

Solution: I wrote this simple C# program to do this work for me. It reads and saves the web page, and then waits for a certain given time, say 12 hours. The program will read the web page again, and compare this one with the one saved before. If there is a difference, it will save a copy and let you know. It continue to watch for the changes in the web page.

Problem: Sometimes, I need to go to the washroom at night. It's painful to turn on the super bright lights in my room. And I like to sleep in a dark room.

Solution: Build this Motion Sensor Light. I just wave my arm in the bed, the light will be on for a minute. Very convenient design for me. Also this is my first time to build a simple wood house from scratch. Nice experience.

Problem: I listen to the music while I am driving. I plugged my MP3 player into my car, and enjoy whatever it has in there. The memory is not big enough, so that I have to reload some new musics once a while. It bothers me because I have to remind myself to take the player into my room, and take it back to my car. I need a new solution to make my life easier.

Solution: using wireless. I have a PDA with built-in GPS, so I keep it in my car all the time in case that I cannot find my way home. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0, and has .NET 2.0 Framework, wireless card as well. I wrote two pieces of applications in C#. One is the Server running on my PDA, the other is the Client running on my desktop in my room.

How it works: I drive home, and park my car outside of the house. I connect to my wireless router (no internet needed) using PDA's wireless card. I will get an IP address (normally, I set it static as default). I start my Server program on the PDA, and ready to listen to the connection. I turn off other applications and dark the screen to save the power. I lock my car, and go into my room. Then I run the Client program on my desktop, specify the server IP (usually it sets as default). I choose a folder where I want my musics to be pushed. I press "Start to send" to begin the job.

This is a small Google Maps application. It allows you to find out the calling code for any country on this planet. Just navigate to the country you want to call on the map, and click the marker on this country area. An information window is popped up to show the calling code.

This is an interesting application which allows you to translate a type of language to different languages. No matter what language you enter below, the system will detect the language you used, and then try to translate it to more than 20 other languages. Just copy and paste, let all the world know what you are saying.

People can beat illness, lose weight, have better skin, and are healthier if they eat a large variety of fruit and vegetables everyday. Our body needs fresh food. However, with our busy lifestyles, it can be hard to fill our bodies with whay they need.

Smoothie and juice will be a good choice, since each of them is made by several kinds of fruit and vegetables, and they are fresh and tasty. In this website, I will experiment and demonstrate different smoothies, juices and milkshakes, and share them with you. Delicious!

It is a very cheap self-made motor boat. It cost less than 8 bucks, and it gave me a lot of fun. I used lots of recycled materials for this boat. It only took me few hours to finish it. I tried it in a local lake. It is on the water, and moving smoothly. The speed is ok, same with ducks'. I called it Twin-Engine "Speed" Boat.

I think, for a long term project, I can make a remote control for this boat, so that I don't need to tie a string on it, and pull it back, like flying a kite.

How 3D pictures work

What see your eyes
When you make a 3D picture (stereogram) you use one important feature of human eyes - every eye sees a different picture. The difference depends on the distance of every object on the picture from the head of the observer. We won't do a long explanation - let's make a short experiment instead. Take anything to your hand - for example a pen.
Well, you have a pen in your hand. Point it up. Give it before your eyes to a distance to see it well. Now take a look at any object behind the pen – for example at a computer monitor or at a cup of tea on the desk. The pen should be in the distance about 6 inches from this object.
Close your left eye and shift the pen to place it in a position which you can easily remember. For example before an edge of the monitor. And now open your left eye and close the right one. Do you see the difference? If you did the experiment carefully, you could see the pen shifted to the right (but it hasn't moved really). No success? Try it again.
From our experiment we can see the left eye sees things, which are in front (for example in front of the edge of the monitor), a little bit more to the right than the right eye. And the things at the back a little bit more to the left (you can try to position the pen behind the edge of the monitor). How to use it for creating a 3D picture? If you have one photo from the point of view of the left eye and one photo for the right eye then the only thing you have to do for 3D is - to deliver every photo to it's eye. How? You can merge the photos in a special way and then to watch them through a special glasses (because without the glasses every eye sees the same).

Blue-Red glasses
The most affordable glasses you can use for watching stereograms (3D pictures) are glasses with red-blue (red-cyan) slides. The glasses you can get here for free. How the glasses work?
If you give the glasses before your eyes (red slide before the left eye, blue slide before the right one) then you can see this: left eye sees the red world and the right eye the blue world. But it isn't all. There is one more important thing. If something is red (for example a red cup on the white desk) then the left eye almost can't see it (it sees the red cup on the red desk), right eye sees it as dark. Similarly the right eye doesn't see the blue (blue-green) things. If the background isn't white then the situation changes - but the basic princip is the same - different eyes see different things.
And that's all the trick. If you take your photos for the left and right eye and use only their red or blue (bluegreen) part and then mix it then you get the stereogram (3D photo). When you use the glasses every eye sees only the part of 3D picture which has to see. But how to do this?

Finally, I had the chance to make my own T-shirt. Never thought it could be that easy.

Four things are required: Inkjet Printer, T-shirt Transfer Paper, Iron, and white shirt.

1. Design the images on the computer.

2. Print the image on the transfer paper using Inkjet printer only.

3. Iron the paper onto the shirt.

There are few lessons I got during the process.

1. The images should be flipped horizontoally on the computer, so that it appears right on the shirt.

2. After finish one side, be careful to do the other side. The finished side may be damaged again in the hot.

3. Make sure the shirt is flat, and the image is straight.

The materials I used for this are:

One solar-powered garden light

One big glass jar

Glass frosting and glitter

Some cute stickers

The coolest thing is that the garden light has a light sensor. When there is enough light outside, the LED will be turned off automatically. The AA rechargeble battery will be filled up by the sun.  When the light is weak, the LED will be turned on as a table light, and it uses the battery as the power.

It is a good gift idea!! Special and unique!

This project uses the GPS technology to Sync the GPS standard log with the video, and display the driving speed on the video in real time.

I used the following things for this project:

1. "mplayer" is used for video and audio editing.
2. a java program is written by me to add the speed and location on the frames.
3. the NMEA log file is generated from my GPS device.

I did a very interesting research on people's driving habit via analyzing their driving speed. I collected the driving speeds using GPS NMEA log.

I think there are some advantages by doing this:

Find out the shortest route from A to B.

Find out the "cheapest" route (least gas consumption) from A to B.

Find out the traffic condition at different time in a certain route.

The purpose of this project is to tag the photos on the Google Map or Google Earth.

How it works:

1. I used my PDA which built in the GPS, and a third party GPS log program. I turned on my GPS, and let it log an entry every two seconds. Each entry ($GPGGA) contains the time, latitude, and longitude, etc. (for more information, check the NMEA specification online).

2. I took photos outside using my digital camera. The camera's time should be same with the GPS's. (try your best)

3. I wrote a Java program to combine the GPS log and the digital images. The images were updated with the GPS tag in the EXIF header (for more information, read the EXIF specification). A .KML file was generated as well. The algorithm to do it was very tricky. I tried and tested many times in order to get the best result (best matches). Here are two tries. The images are not very good, since I took it in the moving car (and at night). I just want to show you a basic idea.

4. Then I uploaded everything on my web server. It just works fine.

The purpose of this idea is to show all users on the google map. Therefore, it is very easy to see where my "users" come from. By looking at the users on the world map, the company can decide where they should put their next server or next service station.

I put this function on my previous project "Birthday" which was designed to help people to find other people who have the same birthday. I wrote the program to look at everyone's location, I first found their latitude and longitude, and then show them on google map. Very cool.

I don't like any image search engines in nowadays. They are all time-consuming and inefficient.

For example, goole image. You have to click twice to see a full image. And in most cases, you click twice on the Back button to get back the main page in order to look for another image. There are 18 images in one searching page, if you want to view them once, you need 72 clicks. Moreover, some images are junks, they direct you to a website. What do you think?

I designed my image search style. I have to say I use the google search engine, and I reformat it in my expected way. You will see the previews at the top of the page, and details as following. You can view all full images without even a single click. Moreover, you can copy the image URL address by clicking once on the text field. Very, very convenient.

One more thing I want to say is that, some junk images couldn't be displayed. That means they are not images, and they will direct you to a website. Bad boys!

This little application was written for resizing images. You can specify an image or a folder for the input and the output, it will resize them to the certain size. You don't have to enter both width and height, it will calculate the perfect size for you. I found it was very handy for me.

Usually, people use Javascript to randomly display images. It costs lots of typing and further management.

This time, I used PHP to achieve this goal. It is very simple.

My alarm woke me up at 6:30AM every day. Sometimes, I was too tired to open my eyes, then I wanted to sleep 30 minutes longer. Reset the alarm was the only choice for me to avoid getting late to work. However, it was hard for me to reset it back for the following day. Therefore, I wrote this small application to wake me up on time.

In this application, you just tell it how long you want to sleep, and choose a song(MP3 only). It will wake you up by playing the music on time. Very handy. There are many other usages, for example, you need to catch the next bus in 8 minutes. You tell to the application, and it will remind you on time. You can save your time and attentions from keeping watching the clock.

For example, you want to search Toronto. You type "Toronto" in the blank, and press enter. There will be some search engines shown on the top. Click any one of them. You will see the result on the same page.

I think it is very convenient. You don't need to switch among all those search engines, just do all of them on one page.

A chatting room was written using PHP and JS.

I tried to keep it as simple as possible in order to ensure the high-speed connectivity and easy usability.

Just enter a name and start to talk.

It will become an important communication tool when MSN is not available.

Usage: Provide approximate 2W (4.5V, 400MA) in the sunny day!

It is good for charging any USB devices, like iPod, cell phone etc. Since the regular computer USB port is 5V, 500MA.

1. prepare an image (image.jpg)

2. Open the Notepad, and write something in there. (text.txt) make sure both files are in the same directory.

3. Run "cmd" to open the command window, and change to the directory where you save the image.jpg and text.txt.

4. execute "copy image.jpg/b + text.txt/a new.jpg" (the new.jpg is the new image which you want to create)

You probably saw those images which can show your local IP address on the interent before. Is it hard to make? Not really! You can achieve this by using PHP, since PHP has a function named "ImageCreateFromJPEG" which allow you to generate an image dynamically.

It is not hard to find your IP address using PHP. However, the location is a big problem. I found a Chinese IP database, and it contains a list of IP and its associated country or city. The problem is that it only supports Chinese so far.

Then I pass 2 parameters via the URL. One is the image's URL address, the other one is the text you want to add on the final generated image. The URL format is: http://www.sunnyspeed.com/idea/53_200609_ip/ip_speed.php?pic=your image's URL&text=your word

Had this idea long time ago, so dreamed to have a dual screen laptop.

What is a dual screen laptop?

A dual screen laptop is a new generation laptop which has 2 built-in screens. It is mainly designed for graphic designers, game players, and everyone who needs a big screen on laptop. When the laptop is not in use, you can slide in (or fold) the 2 screens. Then it is much like a normal laptop, but it may be a little bit thicker and heavier than a normal laptop. When you open the laptop, you slide out (or unfold) the 2 screens. Now, you have a double-sized laptop screen than usual. It's awesome. You can still use one screen without open another screen, (ie. the second screen is behind the primary screen), so that you can save space and power.

How fast can you click the mouse, and accurately? This game will tell you.

Game Rules:
A new black dot is coming out every 3 seconds, and it is going to disappear in 6 seconds.
Click it before the dot goes away, and try to keep all dots on the stage.
Last the game as much longer as you can.

I put them together, and made some changes. Very funny.
This animation video was made in computer, so cool.

This MTV was created after the HongKong movie "Infernal Affairs 3".
Andy Lau is my favourite star. ^_^
I cut the movie and merged them to a music video. Very interesting, take a look.
